GOBI IS UNIFORM

“Gobi questions repetition and difference.”
This project is centered on the idea of “Gobi is Uniform.” It dedicates twenty nouns to the Gobi jacket, each drawn from the unique values of Parajumpers. Cy Choi’s drawings and handwritten words are transformed into hand-printing and embroidery, revealing an obsessive hand-machine craftsmanship. By reinterpreting the Gobi jacket in broken twill denim, a material not previously used for the Gobi, the project celebrates its past twenty years and imagines its future aging and evolution over the next two hundred years.
Chul-yong Choi ( @cychoi_choichulyong ) studied fashion and art at Hongik University and Domus Academy in Milan. After working as a designer and art director for European fashion brands, he launched CY CHOI in 2009, presenting his work in Paris and at Seoul Fashion Week. He is currently a professor of Textile Art and Fashion Design at Hongik University and a contemporary artist. Moving between fashion and contemporary art, he explores individual emotion and existence within the structure of the “uniform” through painting, installation, and text.
